The title of this work refers to Borges' short story of the same name, and to the mysterious point in the story, found under the stairs, which contains everything in the world – past, present, and future. Aleph is also the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and is thus, on multiple levels, a starting point for various things. The work spreads out below the stairs in a corner of the exhibition from floor to ceiling. A box on the wall reveals trickling water, thereby turning the concept of an island upside down; here, the water is the center—the inside—while the material and colors are on the outside, appearing as an ocean of painted stripes and surfaces in various colors on the wall areas surrounding the water box. In this context, the water can also be seen as the origin of creation, a primordial ocean, and as a metaphor for emotions, spiritual movement, agility, and flexibility. In this way, the work operates both formally and metaphorically with a hard, angular exterior and a soft, watery interior.Anne-Marie Pedersen is primarily a painter, but over time she has thoroughly pulled the painting out of its frame and into the room. However, her installations always clearly bear the mark of her foundation in painting and, not least, in color.
